If you've been paying attention, you know that the COVID-19 pandemic isn't going away any time soon. This is going be very costly for restaurants, especially dine-in restaurants. Once the states decide to open up, it will be a gradual opening up that will take months. And when the opening up starts, restaurants will be able to only operate at 50% capacity. Will you be able to stay afloat at only 50% capacity? Unfortunately, a lot of restaurants will be forced to give up and close down for good. Sorry that we have to be the bearers of the bad news.
Who will be able to "make it"?
National chains will be able to stay afloat. Why? Because they were prepared. But how could anyone be prepared for this? Nobody expected it!
By having a website, social media presence and a customer database, they could keep their current customers and future customers updated on their opening hours, their limited menus for carryouts, the curbside service they started offering, and more. And with an online ordering system in place, they didn't have an issue at all transitioning from phone orders to a much better and simpler way for customers to order and pay online with cards.
We must note that most restaurants did have some type of online ordering via third-party delivery services like Doordash, GrubHub and Ubereats. But the fact of the matter is that the third party delivery services came with a very hefty price tag...like having to pay almost 35% per order. But what's worse is the fact that these aren't the restaurants' customers, therefore the restaurant doesn't get any information like phone numbers and emails so they could turn these third-party customers into their own loyal customers.
The good news is that it's never too late to get started with going digital. It's time for restaurants to go digital or bust! Sorry to be so blunt about it, but that's the reality. Whether you accept it or not, that's on you.
